What is a memory quilt and what do you need to make one?

A memory quilt is a quilt made to honor a loved one who has passed. I use the clothing (I’ve done them with as few as one blouse or shirt or only neck ties!) from the person you wish to honor and create a quilt to help you through your grief. I used to be a grief therapist, and I know there are very few tangible things to help someone through their grief. But, a quilt made from your loved one’s clothing can be very comforting.

What kind of quilts do you make?

I’m a very experienced quilter and love many types of quilting from traditional to modern. I love classic quilts as well themed and modern. I’m happiest when making a quilt I know my customer will love! I enjoy the entire creative process. The only technique I really do not do is applique.

How long will it take to receive my quilt?

The real answer is “it depends.” There are a number of factors that impact the time line, including how much needs to be done to prepare the garments to be used in the quilt, how complex the piecing and quilting designs are, whether you’re having me bind the quilt, and how many quilts are ahead of yours in the queue. When you place your order, I’ll give you an estimated completion date range and communicate with you about any changes to that estimate.

Can I be involved in designing my quilt?

If you’ve ordered a custom quilt I won’t even begin working on it until you’ve approved the design and will take into consideration your  ideas. We’ll talk about styles for the type of quilt you order,  if you have specific requests, I’ll do my best to meet them. If you don’t want to be involved in designing, I’ll show you some samples of different types of quilts so I can get an idea of the type you like. I’m happy to design and create a custom quilt for you and have a great deal of experience doing just that.

Can you include photos in a quilt?

Yes! I use a transfer process to include photos. I’ll let you know what I need from you to include a photo. Please keep in mind that photos don’t stand up well to many launderings, so if this will be a well-used quilt, it may be best to forego the photos. But, if you’re planning to hang it on a wall or rarely wash it, photos should be fine.

What makes a quilt a quilt?

A quilt is made up of three layers—quilt top, batting, and backing—and a decorative stitching design holds those layers together. Quilts can also be tied, but I always do the decorative stitching on my long-arm machine. This is a beautiful large quilting machine I use to do custom quilting on your quilt. I currently long-arm quilt on a HandiQuilter Avante machine.

How big will my quilt be?

That will entirely depend on your preferences and how many garments you send to me. I can make a smaller lap quilt up to a queen or king size.

Can I wash my quilt?

Most quilts can stand up to a lot of washing. Memory quilts, however, are usually made from fabrics that are not made for quilting. In a quilt made from all the same type of fabric (such as quilter’s cotton), it’s easy to predict how the entire piece will react when washed. But, a memory quilt is often made from a variety of fabrics and each type will react differently to laundering. The short answer is “Yes, you can wash it,” but the caveat is that it may not look or feel the same after you do. We can discuss the best way to wash it or clean it and whether dry cleaning is the best choice for the fabrics in your quilt.
