A custom quilt can be a beautiful way to remember a loved one or a time in someone's life, like the first year of your baby's life or your child's athletic or band experiences through the years. Each quilt is made personally for you with care and creativity.

Why do I make memory quilts?

I am a former grief therapist and avid quilter. In 1996, my dear sister-in-law passed away and leaving my brother and their five children dealing with the worst grief. As I helped my brother go through his wife's closet, I gathered a few of her favorite dresses and took them home with me. I made teddy bears and pillows for my nieces and nephews and a quilt for my brother. I quickly realized how meaningful those items were to them as they recognized her clothing. Since then I've had the privilege of creating many memory quilts for friends and acquaintances and have humbled every time one of them tells me how meaningful it is to them to have such a beautiful reminder of their loved one. It's a calling for me, and I'm honored to get to do it!
What's the process?

Since a custom quilt is such a personal item, you'll first answer a few questions to give me an idea of what you'd like. I want you to be 100% happy with your quilt, so it's important I understand a little about the person it's honoring. and what you're looking for.

Once I have the garments from you, I get to work preparing them and working on a layout. By this time I should have a good understanding of the type of quilt you're looking for. Once the clothing is in my hands, I will also have a good idea of what I can and can't do with it. I would never want to use scissors on any of the clothing until I'm certain you'll be happy with the result! It takes about 10 days or so to complete your custom quilt and then I carefully package it and ship it to you.

What is a quilt?

That may sound like a very simple question, but a lot of people don't know what makes a quilt a quilt! By definition, a quilt is three layers held together by decorative stitching or ties. The first layer is the quilt top--it's what I make with your loved one's clothing. The second layer is batting; the batting adds the warmth and usually the weight of the quilt, and it also has a great deal to do with what the finished quilt looks like and how it drapes. The last layer is the backing. I use a long-arm quilting machine to stitch a decorative design through the three layers. This is called "quilting the quilt." Always be sure that the person making your quilt is actually quilting it. it'll last longer, be more durable, and be better quality. If they tell you "it doesn't matter" or "it's not necessary" they're just plain wrong!

Below are a couple examples of quilts I've made from clothing (the one on the left is from shirts and ties and the one on the right is mostly from t-shirts with a couple embroidered handkerchiefs and a nightgown as well!). In both cases I asked lots of questions about the person being honored so I could tailor each quilt to honor the loved one. Check out the gallery for photos of more custom quilts.
